Chapter 10

“I can’t hear her,” Eamon yelled into the dash screen as he rebuckled his belt, now that he was back in the van. “Max? Why can’t I hear her?”

“Signal’s jammed,” Vince answered in his marine-calm voice that scraped along the edge of Eamon’s nerves. “Probably why we couldn’t get a signal off them back at the bar. She’s okay, Eamon. She’s alive.”

“She was alive when she got in the SUV,” Eamon corrected, wondering if his heart was ever going to beat again. He pinned his gaze on the roof of the SUV that was gradually gaining distance on them. “We don’t know what she is now. What was she thinking, getting into that car?”

“She was probably thinking she doesn’t want anyone else getting hurt on account of her.” Vince’s matter-of-fact statement made sense, but it didn’t sit well with Eamon. “I’d be more concerned about who the guy in the café was. Max? You get anywhere on surveillance in the area?”

“Yeah, hang on.” Max’s voice and activities were muffled before a second voice echoed on the other end. “Jason just got here. He’s setting up and will hack into the feeds I was able to pick up on.”

“If Jason gets busted for this, I’m going to expect a federal bailout,” Vince warned Eamon. “Lana went with her gut.” He switched lanes, stayed a good three car lengths behind the SUV. “We weren’t there and we weren’t in her head. Give her the benefit of the doubt.”

“I should have been with her,” Eamon said. “And her gut is what got her suspended from the force in the first place.”

“Beating yourself up about this isn’t going to do any good. Max? You’ve got us on your map, right? Where are we headed?”

“Three choices. Old Sac, I-5 or...”

“The rail yards.” Vince and Eamon spoke at the same time.

“Max, you stay on her tracker and let us know the second it comes back on line.”

“Way ahead of you. Jace, let’s...”

Eamon blocked out the chatter. “She was jumpy. I should have seen it. Telling her about Cynthia Randolph probably pushed her over the edge.” He should have gone with her. They should have revamped their plan so she wouldn’t have been alone.

“Stop woulda coulda shoulda-ing,” Vince ordered. “And stop thinking with your...heart,” he said with a wince. “You’re a good FBI agent, Eamon. Start acting like it. You can begin by remembering she’s a cop with a decade’s worth of experience behind her. You know her. Better than the rest of us do. What was she thinking when she got into that car?”

It took some doing, filtering through the last few minutes to dig out what Vince was asking for. “Collateral damage. She’d do whatever she could to stop the fallout from affecting too many people.”

“All right. Good. Max? You got anything on those cameras yet?”

“Not yet. Jason’s having some issues getting into the... What?”

“Someone’s in the system already.” Jason’s voice snapped through over Max’s. “I’m trying to get in around them, but it’s going to take some time so they don’t know we’re piggybacking in on their hack.
